Update on the Beta Sandbox

As a small update on the new sandbox – I have been running this in the background this morning to give a better picture of what Google suggests will be the search rank of ‘Dublin hotels’ if the sandbox formula was inherited. The list shows that at the top the changes are, in the main, minor – but only in comparison to some of the violent swings seen in the outer reaches. The real points are that some sites have disappeared completely from the top fifty and others have shot to fame. Take The Hilton website, it doesn’t currently exist in the Google top 100 but would be installed in the top 10 under sandbox. To be specific – the same website is ranked around 400 currently! So if most of the sites have stayed the same (give or take) what has the Hilton in it’s arsenal that propels it so far and fast under the beta version?

Where has all the web gone?

The beta search results are showing that the number of web pages in the results are dramatically reduced. For example the number of results for Dublin Hotel Offers is back close to 9 million – of 50% less in the Beta. The figure in my opinion was mainly a redundant one unless you were doing come competitive stuff.

Term +/- on G
Dublin hotels offers -8,940,000
Cheap hotels Dublin -8,750,000
Hotels Dublin -8,130,000
Hotels in Dublin -7,980,000
Dublin hotels -7,770,000
Dublin City Hotels -7,510,000
Dublin hotel deals -5,910,000
Weekend Break Dublin 251,000
Dublin City Centre Hotels 570,000

But should we suggest that Google intends to kill off (in indexing terms) about 9 million pages for the expression Dublin Hotel Offers? Would it save anything?
