ABC Circulation February 2015

My elation from yesterday, at what could have been perceived as a softening of the falls, was short lived when it was pointed out that the February ABC figures I had used were in fact the six month average to February and not the February only ABC. As you will see below the picture is indeed bleak (I should have known: it was “good news” in the same sentence as “Newspapers” – seriously). In fact The Sun and The Mirror took a bath last month especially the former dropping 2,200 on the month. Overall the tabloids are down 4,300 on

ABC Newspaper Circulation July December 2014

The bi-annual speculation begins in earnest today about the ‘future of print’ with the eventual release of the last of the six-month figures for the Irish Newspapers, today covering July to December 2014. Taking and over view first: over the twelve months the overall market has declined by a further 7%. And both the Sunday and morning market have also fallen by 7%. There’s nothing at all positive in the overall figures with the rate of change in the declines beginning to slide in the wrong direction after stabilising of a few periods albeit still in negative territory. ABC Sunday Newspaper Circulation July December 2014

The Sunday market fell 7% between July December 2013 and July December 2013. The market now stands at 756,118 copies every Sunday down 54,778 on the same period last year.  The biggest selling paper on Sunday is still the Sunday Independent selling 219,007 copies every week. This is down 4.5% on the previous year or 10,375 copies and their actively purchased figure at 96% remains in line with last year. It’s followed by the Sunday World who had a greater than market drop of 9% or 18,719 paper per week leaving them at 189,562. The Sunday World makes up a

ABC Morning Newspaper Circulation July December 2014

Morning newspapers saw a decline of 7.2% over the twelve months dropping to 450,956 for July December 2014. The three tabloids audited contributed close to half of that decline, dropping 16,371 collectively. The Irish Independent remains the largest selling paper in the morning moving 112,502 copies each day down 4% or 5,000 on July Dec 2014. It has to be noted that in this figure, 86.7% of that is actively purchased compared to 87.2% in July December 2013. Their single copy sales and subs come in at 94,182 compared to 98,568 the comparable period last year, a drop of 4%

January 2015 Irish Newspaper ABC Circulation

It was never going to be that difficult to increase sales on the back of a miserable December, which the morning market has done and it see a rise of over 13,000 on the month. However the year on year figure shows the morning market down over 19,000 on January 2014.These figures have to be a gift to some of the papers (notably the morning tabloids) who are struggling to maintain purchasers every morning. The Sunday Market didn’t do as well as it fell over 4,000 compared to December 2014 and just over 30,000 compared to January 2014.It was the

December 2014 Irish Newspaper ABC Circulation

The final ABC of 2014 was released today. Both the December ABC and the July-Dec figure are available for the majority of papers in the Irish Market.   Looking at the December ABC first: it’s a month that’s normally very quite in terms of newspaper sales and this is reflected in the morning figures here. The Daily Star had another torrid month dropping 2,200 in December alone. It’s not an isolated loss for the publication having sustained in or around 2,000 declines every month since September. The Sun and The Mirror also declined but not to the extent of The

Publishers Facebook Statistics 2014

Just to round up one portion of ’14 – I’ve a summary of how the Irish titles fared in some of the the social wars – Facebook. Not that Facebook fans are a huge measure of success/failure of a titles social media efforts – it’s simply a metric that people are familiar with and they are comparable. Personally I fit into the “familiar with” as opposed to “comfortable with” category as I notice that some publications in Ireland have around 30% of their fans from Ireland and another 30% from Africa, where, I can assure you, they do not sell.

One audit left for 2014 which will be issued early January. But it’s really all over bar the shouting at this stage. The tabloids took a beating again this month with only one notable good news story coming from New UK during the week regarding their digital offerings. The one number that caught my eye was the Daily Star (56,700)and its relentless race to the bottom (numerically). Now back into second place again behind The Sun, it managed a spectacular 2,000 drop in sales month on month. The marketing machine that once was so aggressive there seems to have fallen

Digital offerings from News UK

Some interesting information from News UK, publishers of The sun, The times and Sunday Times. The latter two papers are wrapped up in a company called Times Newspapers Ltd who just announced that they turned a profit of £1.7m in 2014– shedding brackets off the company for the first time in thirteen years. They attribute most of the turnaround to their growth in digital subscriptions and membership (a print and digital package) and less reliance on advertising revenue. They have 390,000 titles across both titles with 170,000 opting for the digital only proposition. The other 220,000 are undecided and taking

ABC Digital independent.ie 2014

We’ve had no toys to play with lately, until this email dropped in from the ABC announcing the certification of our own independent.ie based on traffic in July 2014. Their last cert was released in March 2012 so in the intervening thirty two months something must have changed! And as much as that “thirty two months” quip is somewhat mocking at the breakneck speed of this digital media business, at least the Independent have, finally, provided some digital data whereas the rest of the players in the Irish Digital Media landscape are completely bereft of any publicly available digital data

October 2014 Irish Newspaper ABC Circulation

The euphoria of the English premier league was short lived with the tabloids actually below where they were before the kick of a ball. Both The sun and The Star are at 58,000 and the Mirror at 46,000. In total the tabloids are down 6,600 month on month and nearly 17,000 on the year. The morning market now stands at 221,000 which is down 21,000 year on year. In the Sundays there were a few moves. The Mail on Sunday was down nearly 3,000 and the Sunday Mirror fell back 1,500. The Sunday times dropped again, down 1,400 – perhaps

September 2014 Irish Newspaper ABC Circulation

As predicted, the tabloids slipped back after the euphoria of the start of the premiership abated in September. All the tabloids lost their August lustre and now it’s simply a slow decline to the “C” word on the 25th of December. The Star and Sun are now perilously close to the slipping into the 50’s. Both papers tested those waters briefly earlier in the year only to be saved by the kick of a ball in August. The Star managed to hold on to most of the gains in August whereas The Sun and Mirror were back around 1,500 each

August 2014 Irish Newspaper Circulation

I had to double take on these sets of results – so used to the doom and gloom at follows the monthly figures like a bad smell that there was a modicum of disbelief and a measure of self-doubt about my ability to use a spreadsheet. But, no they are the real deal. In August, ever paper under scrutiny, made month on month gains bar the FT and the Mail on Sunday. I couldn’t recall the last time that happened but you can put a lot down to sport. The kick off of the premier league would have helped the

JNRS Irish Newspaper Readership 2014

The JNRS Irish newspaper research was released yesterday – without the fanfare that used to be associated with its unveiling some years back. But then it’s only fair to say that some years back some publishers we possibly seeing a growth on their readership year on year.  Since the survey of 2012/3 the readership has been divided between readership of the print edition and a newsbrands digital offering, if they have one. The results are in the tables below and just a few items to point out as I’m not about to glaze over deciphering every nuance in the survey.

“Ta-da” – the cosmetic adverts catchphrase. I use it mockingly as it heralds the publication, finally, of the ABC’s of the reaming newspapers in the market. Plenty of cosmetics would be needed to make these figures even vaguely attractive. The total market contacted by 7% over a twelve month period. The market is still 204m newspapers a year, but falling at 7% per annum isn’t a sustainable business model. The morning market is falling faster than the Sunday market and you can have as many hypothesis on that as you like.  Market JJ 2014 JJ 2013 Diff ‘000 Diff %

Morning Newspaper Circulation Jan June 2014

The morning market slipped back 6% to 463,000 since the audit of Jan-June 2013 and has now dropped 28% since 2000. The brunt of the fall was felt in the ‘red tops’ who collectively have fallen 35% since the millennium whereas the non red-tops have declined by 22%.   The Irish Independent lost  8,700 copies or 7% of its circulation over the year and managed to kept the bulks at 13% the same as last year. The Irish Times managed to stay ahead of the eighty mark but lost 3,800 (-5%) over the same period last year. But, perhaps things could

Sunday Newspaper Circulation Jan June 2014

The market fell by -6% or 53,000 in twelve months. The Sunday Independent dropped 12,000 over the twelve months to 220,000. The Sunday world lost 13,000 which drops it back to below 200,000 to 198,000. The Sunday Business Post, despite a new look, lost 11% to rest at 34,000.   The Daily Star on Sunday does nothing in the market here and is beginning to reap what is it has sown with an 11% decline year on year. The People outperformed that and dropped 16% of its sales in the year. At head office a decision has been made that

July ABC 2014 Irish Newspaper Circualtion

Most of the morning tabloids had a bit of a mini-rally with The Sun and The Mirror gaining month on month.  However the Daily Star didn’t figure in the ‘surge’ dropping 150 copies and its first place spot among the redtops as well. The Daily Mail reports a drop of over 6,000 on the month (-13%) which is a fairly sizeable decrease in a calendar month but much of that could be down to a reduction in their Multiple Copy Sales figure which dropped by over 3,000 month on month. The rest of the mornings are minimal in terms of

Irish Newspaper Circulation June 2014

This month sees The Sun and The Daily Star dip below the sixty marks and the Mirror roots itself solidly into the forties. I’ve never made any bones about it – but I’m a huge fan of tabloids, but by no means a tabloid apologist when they over step the mark – as they have on numerous occasions. The dip this month is particularly worrying for that group of papers. I appreciate dropping below sixty is purely psychological, but it has the ability to affect people within a struggling news brand. Selling a publication with a circulation of (say) 61,000

ABC Irish Newspaper Circulation May 2014

Nothing spectacular happened in May – the end of the premier league and the beginning of the Football and Hurling championship (and therefore order being resorted to the world!). The ABC’s were equally less than spectacular and continued along the same lines as normal. The Daily Mirror stepped into dangerous territory, dropping below the 50k mark. It had dipped there before in December, but that’s allowed given the season etc.The Daily Star managed to keep ahead of The Sun by a slim 82 copies, dropping 900 copies in the month and the latter picking up 300. The Sunday tabloids as
