The quarterly results for the JNLR have been released and must bring come comfort to the radio sector. Radio listenership was up one point to 83%, back to where it was at the beginning of 2016. A driver in that growth was an increase in radio listenership in Dublin from 75% to 77% over the quarter.

On the back of this increased radio popularity the stations fared well over the year. 2FM managed a two point increase on the same period last year and it brings them back to their 2015 levels. After all the tinkering that the station has been through the ‘win’ is a small vindication of the changes.

In the Dublin franchise, nothing really happened! Radio increased by two points, but it’s not really reflected in the radio figures with only six movers. Radio One dropped a point in the capital while 104, Spin, 2FM and Sunshine all moved up a point.

The quarterly JNLR radio research was released earlier and the first item of note is that the brakes look like they have been finally applied to the overall listenership of both National and Dublin listenership, national steady at 82% and Dublin at 75%.

National

Looking at the stations in the National picture, Today FM is the only station to show a percentage drop book on book - down one point to 10% their lowest figure to date. The rest of the stations remained very much as is/was.

The JNLR radio research for the first quarter of 2017 has been released. Nationally it shows there has been an increase in listenership to 82% or 3,083,000, an increase of 101,000 on the last book and 94,000 on the previous year. It also means that the total number listening to the radio is above the three million mark for the first time since 2015.

It should be noted that there has been a small increase in the estimated population in this survey and there are times when the overall percentage may actually go down in comparison to other books, but the absolute number of people could remain the same or indeed increase in some cases, again, due to the change in universe.

Dublin is looked at separately, but it’s interesting to compare the fortunes of the national reach and the Dublin reach the latter not having seen an increase in radio listenership since 2014 and it’s been on a straight decline since mid-2015.

radio3

The National stations all improved on a book on book basis with only Today FM showing a drop on a year on year basis. RTE added 24,000 on the last quarter and 13,000 on the year bringing them to 891,000 or 24% (-1%). They had some big gains in the morning with Sean O’Rourke adding 22,000 (7%) book on book.

Behind them is Today FM who increased on the quarter by a healthy 18,000 (5%) to bring them over the four hundred mark to 410,000 (11%) and it’s the station's first improvement book on book since 2015Q1 which has to be seen as a positive.

2FM added 15,000 on the end of last year and is 3,000 ahead of where it was this time last year with Breakfast being their star performer. Newstalk added 16,000 on the quarter and 7,000 on the year. Lyric stands at 144,000 or 4% reach an improvement on both the quarter and on the year.

While the national and Dublin stations in the main improved the local area franchises took a bit of a pounding book on book with only six of the 17 showing an improvement.

Currently 75% of the Dublin population tune into radio every day or 820,000 people. This is up 25,000 on the previous book but in percentage terms, it’s down one point. Listenership of radio has been in decline in Dublin for the last six books in succession (in percentage terms) and whilst the national listenership has had a small uplift in this book the Dublin listenership sees no signs of gains.

The latest research shows that out of the twelve stations in the Dublin survey, nine of them show an increase over the last book but only four show a gain on the previous year. RTE1 dominates with 311,000 listeners every day or a 29% reach. It’s up 12,000 on the previous book and 6,000 on the same time last year. Behind them is FM104 with 178,000 listeners, an increase of 9,000 (5%) on the precious book. There’s a gap of 133,000 between first and second and interestingly that gap, at its narrowest was 52,000 in late 2012.

Newstalk added 5,000 this time around to 154,000 (14%) with no change on the previous year. Spin added 13,000 to 138,000 listeners, an increase of 9% which is the (Joint) highest of any of the stations under scrutiny. 98FM came in at 111,000 down 2,000 on the previous book and Q102 added 9% to 84,000.

Today FM lost 4,000 listeners compared to the last quarter and it further distances itself from the capital. In mid 2015, Today FM drew 22% of its listenership base from the capital but now it currently stands at 16%. It’s not alone struggling in the Pale; 2FM lost a further 1,000 this book to 50,000 in Dublin and it’s down 15,000 on the previous year.

Again, like 2FM, the veneer is covering the cracks. Only one faller, book on book, is Matt Cooper down 2,000. The characters behind the schedules changed between quarters. The 12,000 increase between nine and twelve has a good dose of Anton Savage in there having been on the chair up to December.

In Cork, radio listenership stands at 83% or 355,000 people, which is up 16,000 on the last book. The big winner this book was Red FM adding 12% or 14,000 and really putting some daylight between it and 96FM.

Today FM also had a solid quarter in Cork adding 6,000 or 14% to its listener base. The only station not to see an increase in listeners was C103 dropping 3,000 over the quarter.

Here’s where we look at the local and regional franchises. Again, they are not comparatives as they simply can’t be compared to each other. I’ve made little or no comment as the data is self explanatory and my outpourings won’t add much. Each is compared to the last book and the last year.

While the nationals and Dublin stations, in the main, improved the local area franchises took a bit of a pounding book on book with only six of the seventeen showing an improvement.

The JNLR radio research has been released and it shows that 81% of the population tune into the radio every day. While that’s a healthy reach, given the fragmentation that's seen in other media, there is an underlying downward trend apparent over the last few books.

In 2009 the reach was a particularly healthy 87% indicating that, on average, it’s dropped about a point a year over the last seven years. I think that has to be seen in perspective to radios biggest geographic market, Dublin, where the decline is much more pronounced. It too was at 87% in ’09 but it has now fallen to a 76% reach, with a quiet rapid decline over the more recent few surveys.

RTE1 still dominates the radio market with a commanding thirteen point lead on its nearest rival Today FM. RTE reaches 24% of the population every day or 880,000 listeners. That’s down 20,000 on the year and static on the last book.

Behind RTE1 is Today FM on 392,000 and an 11% reach. This is down 45,000 listeners on the previous year and 5,000 on the last book. The station has had a number of changes in recent times and they look like they are not finished by all accounts. This survey would take in most of the time Anton Savage was on air as he departed early December.

2FM have struggled with a settled format and audience over the last few surveys. The last time they had an increase in listenership was in the 15Q2 book so it good to see that they added some listeners for the first time since then in this book. They are up 10,000 on the previous book but back 29,000 on last year.

Newstalk also made a few changes during the year revamping the breakfast show and moving George Hook. The station added 3,000 on the last book settling them in at a 10% reach but they are back 26,000 listeners on last year.  Lyric has a 4% reach and comes in at 135,000 listeners down marginally on both last year and last book.

The only stations to make any gains in this book were 2FM and Newstalk.

Overall Dublin listenership now stands at 76% or 795,000 people every day. This is down one percentage point on the previous book and four percentage points on the previous year.

It's the sixth successive fall in the Dublin market with no sign of a letup. The graphic below gives a good visual representation of what’s been happening over the past few books.

Like the national scene, the market is dominated by RTE1 with a 28% reach and 299,000 listeners every day. That’s down 2% on the previous year and up marginally on the last book.

Newstalk is in the third slot at 149,000 up marginally on the last book but down 10% on the previous year. Spin have had the biggest year on year fall of all the stations down 24,000 (16%) and book on book they are down 8,000 (6%) to land at 125,000. 98FM, Sunshine and FM104 all fell foul of the book recording falls on the previous quarter with only Q102 and Newstalk adding to their numbers.

98FM lost 5,000 on the last book but are still up 10,000 on the previous year. Q102 added 4,000 on the year to reach 77,000 and adding 5,000 or 7% on the last book.

Today have struggled in the metropolis and are now reaching 70,000 which is down 20,000 (22%) on last year and they are stationary on the previous book.

In terms of the Dublin top 20, there’s been a bit of a coup! Marion’s crown has been toppled by Morning Ireland to take the top slot and to add insult to injury, Sean O’Rourke has just nicked the third spot from her second programme – by dropping less that her fall it has to be said. But a win is a win!

*A few of the programme time slots have changed and are therefore are not directly comparable year on year. They are comparable on a book on book basis

It’s worth looking at the absolute dominance of RTE1 in the Dublin market. Looking beyond that, the Newstalk line is interesting where it dominates the other stations in the early part of the day, until around midday, and then it falls behind FM104 and 98FM by 1:00pm.

The part of the research that is most repurposed by the reporting media is the pecking order of the ‘talent’ in terms of the top 30. Note: the time slots for certain programmes have changed over the year (not book on book) and therefore, for the purposes of the Gains/Falls, they have been excluded as the comparative would be skewed.

The year picture was good for RTE1 with wins for Sunday Miscellany and Tubridy. The gains were very much outweighed by the losses in numbers where they suffered badly with Saturday Sport and The Week

Note: The Gains are Falls are drawn from the top thirty programmes and not the complete programming schedule - something I'll correct from the next time out

Book on book Phil Cawley did well adding 12%. Newstalk breakfast, one of the format changes added 6% book on book giving that time slot some hope. In terms of falls, it looks like the whole Saturday afternoon schedule took a bit of a beating.

A clarification is necessary. Just taking the national stations: when it comes to the station programmes there are 150 different times slots to compare and then by three books! I normally cull this down to the top 30 and it’s from that culled list that the ‘gains’ and ‘fallers’ are taken. I probably should have specified that earlier.

So after a query and a ‘nudge’ below is are the Gains/Fallers taken from the complete programming schedule available nationally. Makes a bit of a difference! I’ll be looking at both scenarios in future.

The early part of the day dropped back a little. While the departed Anton was down 19,000 on the year his last book showed signs of arresting the declines he suffered. If the original ‘goal’ for Anton's show was to get to 65% of Rays last figure, then 164,000 is 76% and he’s (was) well covered!

Plenty of changes of late with Breakfast taking a revolving door approach to presenters and George chatting with us through lunchtime. The breakfast club seems to be working gaining 7,000 on the previous book. However, George has dropped back as has the rest of the afternoon schedule.

Radio listenership in Cork remained at 82% but fell in absolute numbers to 339,000 down 2,000 on the last book and down from 84% (-7,000) on the year.

The two incumbent Cork stations dropped marginally book on book falling 3,000 each since the last survey. Red FM is still the largest station with 117,000 listeners but that’s down 16,000 in last year. 96FM in second place at 106,000 also saw a fall from the previous year of 7,000.

RTE1 dropped 5% on the previous book which was the biggest fall in Cork. Stalemate 2FM managed to a 7% increase (from a low base). Today, 4FM and Newstalk also saw declines book on book.

The regional numners are below. You can do with it as you must. The local franchise areas and the multi city areas are covered with comparisons to the last year and book.

The tables shouldn’t be considered as a comparative as the franchises compete in different areas with vastly different population structures and market dynamics.

Without sounding the alarm bells, the first notable in the research this quarter was another fall in the overall radio listenership figure, to 82% or 2,977,000 people every day.

It dropped 27,000 on the year and 15,000 on the previous book. It’s still a very healthy figure and better than some of the other media stats facing a constant barrage of disruption, but the trend is most definitely downward and has been since around 2010.

The different stations have had varying degrees of success/failure. RTE1 had good quarter adding 4,000 on the previous book and 12,000 on the year leaving them at 880,000 (24%). Today FM dropped 13,000 (-3%) on the book and 56,000 (-13%) on the year. It leaves them sub 400k at 397,000 and an 11% reach (the percentage down from 13% last year).

Newstalk was in a similar position dropping 13,000 (-3%) on the book and 35,000 (-9%) on the year arriving to 367,000 (10%). For 2FM it’s yet another bloodletting with this book. Down 9,000 on the last book and 59,000 (-15%) on the year nothing in the revised schedule seems to be working. When you get to the individual slots you’ll see that some of the programming is simply not working with listeners abandoning them in their droves.

2FM dropped their listenership into single digits at 9% and are now the 4th most popular national station, out of the five on offer. It’s the first time ever they dropped into single digits and you can see from the graphics below that the trend looks set to continue.

Lyric were down 3% on the book but were 2,000 better than this time last year.

It’s worth superimposing the Dublin radio reach on the National figure as it constitutes about 27% of the overall. You can see that the Dublin reach is falling at a much faster rate and has to be affecting the national figure.

Like the National picture, the Dublin one is dominated by the downturn in the overall radio listenership down to 77% or 800,000 people every day. This is down four points on the previous year and down 16,000 listeners on the previous book. The trend graphic is a stark picture of a declining listenership in the capital.

Out of the thirteen stations in Dublin, only three managed an increased book on book figure and only two compared to twelve months ago.

RTE1, 98FM and TXFM were the only stations to add numbers book on book which can’t be the most positive thing for Dublin Radio. From a research perspective, the sample sizes were the same in bothe books so there’s no parachute there.

RTE1 still dominates with 297,000 listeners (28%) up fractionally at 1,000 listeners on the last book but down 5,000 on the year.

The biggest faller in numbers this book was FM104, down 14,000 to 174,000 on the book and a 20,000 drop in the year. This was followed by Newstalk down 10,000 (-6%) to 144,000 and down 26,000 one the previous year. Today FM fell by 9,000 to 70,000 in the capital and this drops them below Q102 and into 7th spot.

2FM lost a further 12% (7,000) to move to 51,000 listeners. It shunts them below Sunshine for the first time and pushes them into 9th position in Dublin. Spin fell 7,000 to 133,000 and dropped 14,000 during the year.

In the tables below a comparison is drawn only if the time slots are the same as the period which it's being compared to. If it can’t be made, then the comparative figure it’s left blank. Therefore in the Gains/Falls only programmes that have directly comparable time slots are included.

I threw everything in in one lot and left our some of the java widgets used in previous occasions. They seem to rebel against mobile devices! And just on mobiles, there's very little I can do about tables - they don't like 'responsive'.

RTE1 still have the best performing programmes during the day – actually eight of them. Some minor adjustments during the day, the only big faller being News at One dropping 10,000. Year on Year they have performed well in the latter half of the day.

It’s been a disastrous year on year for 2FM with all slots dropping double figures. I’d have to point out that the declines have slowed significantly in the last quarter, but is it a bridge to far at this point – are healthy numbers ever achievable stating at this low base?

Overall Cork listenership dropped marginally to 82% or 341,000 down 2,000. There were some small increases for Red FM, small in comparison to some of the gains it made in previous surveys. They now reach 29% of their franchise with 120,000 listeners.

96FM slipped back by 2,000 to 109,000 and they are now being actively chased for second spot by RTE1 who had a good book adding 8% to their listenership in the region. RTE1 finished at 106,000 only 3,000 behind 96FM.

C103, still a way back added 3,000 on the book to 73,000 and Today FM lost 8% of their listeners down and to 44,000. For all the effort Newstalk make in the region its seems to be a slow burn, down 2,000 on the book and 9,000 on the year sharing the slot with 4FM at 39,000

Strikes me as a particularly Machiavellian parish to work in, what with all the desertions and the knives (metaphoric) being drawn most of the time! Book on Book Red FM did very well in the early part of the day adding to both Prendeville and KC. C103 did well adding to the latter half of their day.

Radio listenership has maintained a steady 83% reach over the last four surveys although there are some minor fluctuations in the underlying hard number. In the 2016Q2 survey it’s down 15,000 listeners to 2,992,000 on a year on year basis but up marginally (3,000) on the last book.

RTE1 is still the dominant player (which I mention every time and I can’t see that changing in some time). Their last quarter was disappointing dropping 15,000 on the last book to 876,000 but still managing a small comeback showing an increase of 13,000 on the year.

The next berth in the table is for the bragging rights of second place – but little else. Still 466,000 behind RTE1 is Today FM who are showing a poor year on year down 47,000 and falling 5,000 on the last book.

And 496,000 behind RTE1 and 30,000 behind TodayFM is Newstalk who did manage to narrow the gap with Today by 6,000. They showed a modest increase book on book of 1,000 but they are still down 21,000 on the year.

Further misery was piled on 2FM dropping 13,000 on the previous quarter and showing a 58,000 deficit on the previous year.  I though, last time out, that 2FM might dip into a single digit reach this book and they didn’t - spared the hangman’s noose by a mere 4,000 listeners.

Lyric turned in a positive spin on 2016Q1 adding 1,000 and showing a 9,000 increase on the previous book – the only station showing an increase both on the year and book.

Newstalk have been in the news of late (as has the radio sector) with planned changes to their line-up to accommodate departures etc. It will make for interesting analysis as the numbers come to the fore and see of some of the changes are worth the coverage they got.

Indeed, if the new player in the radio market, Murdock, shakes up the radio market like he did the print market here some year’s back it will make for very interesting times.

In this 2016Q2 survey radio listenership in Dublin fell to 78% for the first time in some time. I’ve tracked back to 2009Q1 and it still hadn’t once dipped into that region. In this survey it fell 2% on the previous year or 16,000 listeners but only lost 2,000 on the previous book to leave it at 816,000 for the survey.

While the underlying figure (816,000) is still higher than previous surveys (changes in sample size etc have had a effect on these numbers) the listening reach and, more so, it’s recent direction should be of some concern.

second 2The year on year figures are starker in terms of their declines than the book on book which is to be expected. Eight of the thirteen radio stations surveyed declined book on book with the biggest fallers being RTE1 (-9,000), 2FM (-7,000), Today FM (-6,000) and Spin (-5,000). 98FM had a good quarter adding 8,000 to their numbers.

The only station to show any promise was 98FM who added 10% on the quarter to bring them to 115,000 and most of that gain coming in the Q2 where they added 8,000 listeners.

Again, like in the national picture, one of the standouts is the performance of 2FM. Over the year it has lost 24% of its listenership in the capital or 18,000 listeners, 7,000 of which abandoned the station in the last quarter. It’s not alone in this listenership flight. Today FM lost 20,000 in the year and 6,000 from Q2. Newstalk lost 16,000 over the twelve months and Q102 dropped 11,000 but the latter two managing to hold their own on the last book.

Dublin radio listenership is under pressure whether it’s down to apathy on the part of the listening public or competition from other sources. Without sounding Dublin centric the capital does play an important part in the radio picture. It may be no coincidence that all of the top ten programmes in the national listenership ‘chart’ have a disproportionately higher draw from the metropolis than average listenership. I’m not saying that it’s the panacea for ailing programme slots or indeed a Willy Wonka type Golden ticket (look what happened most of those winners!) – but, in order to score high on the national stage you have to do it better in the capital.

This time out I’ve compiled a top twenty programmes in Dublin across the week. There’s no point in slavishly going through each item as you can draw your own conclusions. Just a few notables: This Week dropping 28,000 on the book, Claire Byrne shedding 12,000 and Miriam O'Callaghan dropping 10,000. You might think that this would be counterbalanced by some big gains, but the largest is Strawberry Alarm adding 4,000.

A Footnote:

I can’t take the applause for this as “Expunge” in the boards.ie brought this to my attention. Much to the shock of some of the country folk, the recent results have only confirmed what the city slickers have known for some time. They are not uncultured ‘tall and are, in fact, highly sophisticated and embrace d’arts:

Dublin listenership for Lyric is currently 59,000 and 2FM 58,000 – I feel the graphic below says it all.

The tables below show the gains and losses both on the last book and compared to the previous year. If a direct comparison, via the time slot, cannot be made during the comparison – then that programme is not mentioned. So, for example in the year on year gains table, Breakfast Republic is excluded as the time slots are totally different year on year. They are included in the book on book tables as it’s a direct comparison.

Cork shows a listenership reach of 82%, down slightly on both the previous book and year and now stands at 340,000 listeners per day. Book on book none of the stations made any gains except, bizarrely, 2FM who made a 6,000 increase on the last quarter. Both the main stations, Red and 96FM, are in decline of late, the latter by 8,000 and the former by 3,000 over the last quarter

The gap between the two main rivals (Red and 96) narrowed from 12,000 to 7,000 over the quarter.

You can see from the graphic that the momentum that Red FM once had seem to be slowing in the last three surveys but there’s still no gains either for 96FM

In terms of individual programming Cork Today has added 7% in last the quarter and all bar one of the daytime slots on C103 made gains book on book. 96FM and Red showed falls across all their programming (save the Big Drive Home) book on book. The morning slot is still edged by the Opinion Line over Neil Prendeville even though both slots have lost out over the last quarter.

The regional data is below and as it’s varied and plentiful, I’ll leave the interpretation to whomever wishes to make one. The local franchise areas and the multi city areas are covered with comparisons to the last year and book.

The tables shouldn’t be considered as a comparative as the franchises compete in different areas with vastly different population structures and market dynamics.

What an interesting move – News Corp purchased the Wireless group, formally UTV radio. The main station in the wireless group is talkSport reaching 3.1m listeners in the UK every day. Within the Wireless stable are a group of Irish Radio stations: FM104 and Q102 in Dublin, Cork’s 96FM and C103, Limerick’s Live 95FM, LMFM in Louth/Meath, U105 in the Greater Belfast area. Collectively (in the RoI) the stations reach 713,000 listeners every day and UTV105 is listened to by 215,000 daily. For all the stations they have 370,000 Average monthly unique users and 1.7m pageviews per month

In their own words: “News Corp believes that Wireless represents an excellent strategic fit with its existing operations, broadening News Corp’s range of services in the UK, Ireland and internationally”

This means that the Wireless Group is now backed part of a media colossus and will soon be able to lean on some serious media mussel. Below is a map of the station that are owned by Wireless and the two it sells advertising on behalf of.

wireless map ireland

And should you wonder what the next step is - ” there is significant opportunity to increase engagement and monetisation through cross-promotion and leveraging Wireless' and News Corp's respective talent and advertising sales forces” .

Given that there are currently sales teams in the two previously unrelated groups (News International and wireless) is makes sense that some rationalisation takes place. A cursory glance at the Wireless financial reports suggests that there is a huge interest in the digital platform – something close to the hearts of the News Corp management.

I very much doubt is the BCI have any issues with the sale, given the existence of pooling of media here currently.

It’s very much depends on what you analyse for the 2016Q1 results. Look at the numbers year on year you get one answer, look at them book on book you get another! In as many places as possible I’ll throw in both so you can draw your own conclusions.

However in a few cases either analysis still yields the same woeful outcome.

In terms of overall listenership radio reaches 83% of the population or 2,989,000 people every day. It’s down marginally on 2015Q1 and down a little less on the previous book.

Still the dominant player is RTE1 reaching a quarter of the population on an average day or 891,000 listeners. That’s up 6% on the year but down 1% on the last book. They are still comfortably 476,000 listeners ahead of their nearest rival Today FM. That station dropped 13% or 66,000 of its listenership base over the last twelve months and jettisoned 22,000 or 5% in the last quarter. At this point, the last four surveys have seen them chalk up successive losses.

Behind them is Newstalk who overtook 2FM a few surveys back to give them the bragging rights of third spot. Only that Newstalk also turned in falling listenership numbers in this survey they would be very close to claiming second spot. Newstalk dropped back 4% or 17,000 listeners book on book accounting for most of the 25,000 drop over the past twelve months.

It’s worth highlighting the fortunes of both Newstalk and Today over the past few years. Looking at the graphic below, Today have been on a slow decline a for a number of years. Newstalk made great strides from 2013 but look now that they have run out of steam. And there are only problems down the tracks. Ivan Yates is departing the breakfast slot and Hooks’ reign is coming to an end. So plenty to occupy the teams in both stations.

nat gap

Lyric was the only station to record an increase on the last quarter and the year. The recent musical chairs at 2FM looks as if it isn’t getting the desired results. They are down a further 5% book on book and 11% on the year or 43,000 listeners. Individual programmes are not performing with Breakfast dropping 10% book on book and Nicky Byrne falling by 9%.

In terms of optics 2FM are perilously close to sinking into single figure reach and may well go into that parish in 16Q2. Across the day they have seen poor returns and the schedule that took so long to craft is patently not pulling in the listeners

A very quick look below at the more closely fought time slots across RTE1, Today and Newstalk.

Radio listenership dropped in the capital to 818,000 down 1% on the year and the same book on book. The falls are less pronounced on a book on book basis with but looking at them over the year some of the falls are severe. Double digit decrease in the capital for Newstalk, Today FM, Q102 and 2FM and, of them, only Q102 managed to get something back in the last quarter.

RTE1 are still the dominant force reaching 305,000 listeners. They are followed by FM104 on 189,000 a 3% increase on the year. Newstalk, are next on 154,000. Last year they were only 10,000 behind FM104 and this has now drifted out to a 35,000 listener difference mainly due to the last quarter..

FM104, 98FM, Q102, Sunshine and Lyric were the only stations to add listeners in the last quarter and Sunshine was the only station to add listeners over the year.  With most of the stations losing over the year, as did Dublin listenership, it’s hard to tell where they are going instead.

At the start of 2011(Q1), Dublin radio listenership stood at a reach of 87% and it now stands at 79%. That’s a worrying trend and one that would have to be analysed further to see where this erosion is happening.

Here’s where we look at the local and regional franchises. Again, they are not comparatives as they simply can’t be compared to each other. I’ve made little or no comment as the data is self explanatory and my outpourings won’t add much. Each is compared to the last book and the last year.

All the top tables and in the interest of tracking the license fee money the book on book numbers are compared so that 2FM can be scrutinised. The Gains and Falls tables likewise are divided into the year on year and book on book. The metric for the gains and falls are subjectively based on actual listeners and not the percentage gain.

If it were percentages (we should really say) we’d be showering Ray D’Arcy with praise for a 19% increase in listeners year on year and also to Alison Curtis getting a 6% increase book on book.

RTE1 stole a march on the year on year gains taking all five slots. Book on book Alison Curtis spoils the party for them taking #5.

The year on year falls all have a similar hue with three of the slots reserved for Today FM programming. Book on book we begin to see the real story with 2FM taking the top two positions. It should be noted that 2FM can’t be compared year on year as the time slots are not comparable.

The Cork figures show the listenership in the franchise is 83% down marginally on both the past quarter and twelve months. This book shows that Red FM, although at 126,000 which is an increase of 14% on the year is back 7,000 book on book.

It ends a bit of a run for the station having been on the up every book until now since 2014Q1. Closest rival 96FM managed a small increase book on book of 1,000. C013 also had a decent book adding 6,000 or 9% over the quarter.

Overall there was a minor drop in listenership nationally, well within statistical error and certainly not to trouble with this issue any further. National listenership remained at a healthy 83% or 3,001,000 people daily.

Focussing on the stations, the clear winner on the national stage was RTE1 in this book, with a year on year increase of 64,000 listeners (8%) and a book on book gain of 32,000 or 4%.

The veneer of 2FM’s number year on year, holding steady at 374,000, is very much tarnished when we see their more recent past. Their book on book figure has them down 20,000 or -5% on the quarter.

Today FM have been caught in a narrow band of listenership for some time but the numbers for 2015 show them having firmly broken out of that – except in the wrong direction. Year on year sees them back 23,000 or -5% and book on book shows them down 16,000 or 4%.

Newstalk was steady – but it’s possibly an adjective they don’t wish to associate with their efforts. From the beginning of 2013 they had nothing but a near meteoric rise in their listening figures, but the jets have cooled of late and a gain of 4,000 year on year and a drop of 6,000 book on book is not what they were hoping for.
